Plot twist: Mercedes and Red Bull fall short...
Fernando Alonso has signed a new contract that will keep him racing in Formula One with Aston Martin. This closes the deal, eliminating any chance of the double world champion zipping into Red Bull to ignite ‘El Plan’. Bummer.
Since Lewis Hamilton shook up next season’s driver lineup with his jaw-dropping move to Ferrari, and Max Verstappen hinted at a probable exit from Red Bull amid team issues, speculation about Alonso’s return to a top-tier team for a shot at that elusive third title has been non-stop.
However, the stars are not aligning for that scenario. Aston Martin and Fernando Alonso have agreed to a’multi-year’ contract, assuring that he will continue to wear those iconic green overalls after the new engine regulations are implemented in 2026… precisely when Aston teams up with Honda. Talk about timing!
“In the past few months, there’s been a whirlwind of talk about my Formula One future. But today, I’m thrilled to declare that I’m here to rev it up with Aston Martin Aramco, in a multi-year pact,”
Fernando Alonso shared with enthusiasm.
“I mentioned earlier this year that I’d decide on my racing future first and then pow-wow with the team. Since I hopped on board with the crew in 2023, I’ve felt right at home. In just over 15 months, we’ve achieved so much together—those unforgettable podiums, those thrilling battles.”
“I’m deeply thankful for the faith Lawrence, Martin, and Mike have placed in me, and I’m pumped to see what Lance and I can pull off together. This project is just taking off, and I’m honored to be a part of it. I’m at my peak physically and still craving more. I’m going all out as we navigate our journey to snatch that world championship title.”
This means that Fernando Alonso, who has recently considered hanging up his F1 helmet for good, particularly given the arduous 24-race calendar, will continue to pump up his engines in F1, even after turning 45. Only four drivers in racing history have won a grand prix after reaching that milestone, the most recent being Juan Manuel Fangio in 1957, who won his 24th race.
And, guess what? Alonso will still be tearing up the track on the 20th anniversary of his last world championship victory with Renault in 2006. Talk about a legend.
“Securing Fernando’s future with Aston Martin Aramco for the long haul is simply thrilling news,”
Aston Martin team principal Mike Krack.
“Over the last 18 months, we’ve built a rock-solid partnership, united by the same burning desire to see this project soar. The past few months have seen constant chatter, and Fernando stayed true to his word: when he made up his mind to keep racing, he turned to us first. His faith in us is palpable, and our belief in him is unwavering.”
“Fernando’s hunger for victory is insatiable, he’s driving with unparalleled prowess, in peak physical form, and is wholeheartedly committed to propelling Aston Martin Aramco into the winner’s circle. This multi-year pact with Fernando stretches all the way to 2026, as we embark on our powerhouse partnership with Honda. Here’s to crafting more unforgettable moments and achieving even greater triumphs together.”
With eight podium finishes last season and Aston Martin putting resources into their factory, has Fernando Alonso won the jackpot with this move? Time will tell on the Formula One courses.
